Little insects called grubs, are root eating creatures at the larvae stage that can be found throughout Kansas. In the Kansas City area, grubs are quite a problem in lawns. Since they only feed on the roots, many times they go unnoticed until they have caused considerable damage. It is typical to see this kind of damage around the end of August or even the beginning of September.
During the end of July and the start of August is the easiest time to try and kill these pesky root-eaters. It is at this time grubs have emerged from their eggs and burrow up to the topsoil in order to feed on the roots of your lawns grass. Because they are young during this time, they are easier to kill. You can check for grubs by digging up a one foot by one foot area of your lawn that has browning grass. Also, another sign of grubs is if your yard is being dug up by creatures like raccoons looking for grubs to eat.
