As a property manager, testing your property’s soil is a great way to determine whether it needs more water. However, you have to be careful to do it correctly or you will base your decision off of a false reading. Here are some tips that will help you probe the soil properly to receive accurate results.
- Select a spot with soil that has been uniformly fertilized and watered in the past.
- Walk a zig-zag pattern over the area to be sampled. Make sure that you use your soil probe or auger to take plenty of samples from between 4-6 inches deep. As you collect them, mix all of the cores together in a clean and dry pail. You should drill a minimum of 10 cores for every 10,000 square feet of landscaping.
- Seal your sample in a plastic bag and deliver it to a testing center for a soil analysis. They can tell you whether you need to water more or less frequently.
