If you’re going with a live Christmas tree this holiday, we’ve compiled some tips to help you find the loveliest tree this year, that fits your home just right. The first thing to do is be realistic about the space you have in your home; trees look smaller out in the open. You don’t want to bring home a tree that scrapes the ceiling of your living room, or worse, won’t fit through the front door. So, if you’re not sure of the room’s dimensions, take some measurements first.
To determine a tree’s freshness, there are a few things you can do. Gently bounce the tree on the ground; a fresh tree doesn’t drop a lot of needles. If many needles fall, many more will fall when you get the tree home; brittle needles are a sign of a tree that’s sat for a while. Running your fingers down the needles is another way to tell; the needles should be moist and flexible, not dry. Gently pull them against the branch; on a fresh cut tree, they’ll bounce back easily.
When you get the tree home, cut an inch off the base, then set it in water immediately.
