Many homeowners know this, but for some it can still take a little convincing – landscaping is one of the best home investments you can make. Let’s take a look at a great example of this featured on Yahoo! Voices. In a past episode of HGTV’s Bang For Your Buck, the hosts put the landscaping return on investment (ROI) question to the test with three Atlanta couples. Each of these couples invested $70,000 into there landscaping.
The first couple turned their scraggly backyard into an outdoor family room by adding a patio, outdoor fireplace, and over 12,000 square feet of Bermuda sod for their kids to play sports on. The second couple added patio space, a pool, and a spa with a waterfall cascading into the pool. The third couple installed a waterfall and pond that weaved throughout their backyard, a patio and an outdoor fireplace. – Yahoo! Voices
An expert design consultant and realtor were invited to each property to give their opinions of the improvements and of the value-added to each couple’s homes. The results were as follows, the first couple added 65%, a $45,500 value to their home. The second couple added 75%, a $52,500 value to their home, and couple number three added 60%, a $42,000 value to their home. The experiment is a very honest representation of the fact that investing in your landscape is a very sound investment, considering kitchen renovations and home additions will give similar returns.
