“Once there was a tree, and she loved a little boy.”These words grace the first page of The Giving Tree, a story that celebrates how every aspect of a tree’s life cycle supports human existence. Understanding a tree’s life cycle helps us better support the environment they grow in.
- Seed. Every tree begins as a seed. This seed might be in the form of a nut, pod, or fruit. Through the power of Mother Nature, the seeds scatter to the land around it.
- Seedling. In the right conditions, the seed germinates, takes root, and grows leaves and branches.
- Sapling. Eventually, the tree reaches the “tween” phase of its development. As a sapling, it grows quickly and gains more tree-like characteristics, but is not mature enough to produce fruit.
- Maturity. When the tree reaches its mature size, it begins to develop its own seeds. These seeds scatter and grow into more trees!
- Decline. All living things eventually reach their final act. Some trees can survive for millenniums, but typically a tree lives about 50-75 years. Even in its decline, it provides nutrients to the soil and homes for other animals, contributing to the its ecosystem.
