Rainwater collection is a wonderful way to reduce your water bills throughout the summer. In Kansas, you do not require a permit to collect water which makes it even better.
To collect water, you’ll need to install a tank or barrel that is attached to your gutters and downspouts. You’ll want to make sure that your storage system is large enough to collect as much of the water from your roof as possible. Further, you’ll want to make sure that the storage tank is placed on a hard, level surface that can support the weight of a full tank. Remember, water weighs 8 lbs. per gallon, so that weight adds up quickly.
To use your water, connect a spigot or pump that you can attach a hose to and direct the water into your flower beds, garden, or lawn as desired. And, remember to clean the tank periodically to prevent build up of sediment, debris, algae, and insects that will collect in the tank over time.
