If you are still looking for a touch of fall color in your landscape in order to create a bit more interest, don’t knock the ordinary dwarf spirea. Usually used as a space-filler, it is considered a durable yet, under appreciated plant. Dwarf spireas are great because they are a strong plant that can withstand the Kansas City climate.
Dwarf spireas are a large grouping of plants all with slightly different characteristics. These include a compact growth habit, normally less than 3 feet tall and wide. The plants also flower in a range of colors from crimson-red to rosy pink and white. The first flush of flowers normally appears in mid-May and may continue through summer and fall, depending on care. – Dennis Patton kcgardens.kansascity.com
The dwarf spirea grows best with supplemental water during the hottest, driest parts of the summer. However, once the plant is established, it can survive if left alone. It can also tolerate and thrive in full sun to light shade.
