Gardening is a joy but without careful planning, homes can end up with beautiful displays of spring and summer color, without much to offer in the fall. To get you started, here are three fall-blooming perennials that do well in our Kansas City climate.
Perennials For Great Fall Color
Japanese Windflower (anemone tomentosa). While the genus Anemone comes in several cultivars, offering a variety of height, density and bloom color, tomentosa offers the best fall color. This plant begins blooming in vibrant shades of pink and mauve during the summer and will continue blooming throughout the fall.
Aster (Aster). The name Aster is derived from the Greek root for “star” which aptly describes this hearty and colorful perennial. Asters are easy to grow and bloom in a wide range of colors which is why they remain a Top 5 Perennial favorite for gardeners.
Spiderwort (Tradescantia). This plant comes in rich pinks, blues, and purples. It’s normal blooming season is late spring through early summer. However, if you cut it back during mid-summer, you will be repaid with another round of blooms in the fall.
With a little research and planning, your front and back door gardens can yield beautiful blooms all year round.
