The leaves are starting to fall but that doesn’t mean you have to put away your garden tools just yet. Fall is one of the best times of the year to do the tinkering and preparation that will make your garden look beautiful in the spring.
If you want your garden to look vibrant and full of color just a little longer, consider planting some perennials, or even evergreen shrubs. The perennials will of course die out in winter, but the shrubs will be nice and hearty by the time spring rolls around.
Most importantly, if you want to have beautiful blooms in the spring, now is the time to get the bulbs in the ground. They will develop a strong root system and will look fabulous when the spring rains cause them to sprout from the ground.
Finally, don’t discard your leaf pile. Instead, turn the leaves into a mulch and spread it over your garden. As it decays over the winter, it’ll reinvigorate your topsoil.
