One thing that is very important now that we are in the month of May is water management. You may not be aware, but delaying your watering in May is a good idea because it encourages grass roots to grow deeper in order to create a more drought resistant, healthy lawn. Need a few more watering tips to help keep your Kansas City area landscape looking its best? Take a look at a few we gathered from www.johnson.ksu.edu.
- Watering your lawn between 4 and 10 a.m. is best because water pressure is better in the early morning hours, which result in the water making it to the soil instead of evaporating.
- In the summertime, water deeply and infrequently. For testing lawn moisture, use the screwdriver test: if you struggle to push it into the ground, your lawn needs more water; if it goes in easily 6-8 inches, there is plenty of moisture.
- Make sure you adjust your sprinkler so that only your lawn is being watered. You don’t want to waste water by watering the pavement, and it’s important not to water excessively so that fertilizers and other chemicals do not end up in the stormwater system.
